I am Wojciech J. Walkowicz, a self-taught Polish artist, filmmaker and writer based between Oxford and London.
My work is not only about communication. I see it more as an instrument of evolution, self-recognition and emotional survival. Across painting, photography, film, drawing and writing, I try to understand what happens between the self and the world — between what we show, what we hide, and what remains underneath.
I work instinctively. Very often, painting becomes a physical act for me, a way of releasing something before it becomes language. I am interested in turbulence, silence, memory, identity, social masks and the subconscious. Some works begin as emotional therapy, some as fragments of cinema, some as poetry, and some as something I do not fully understand until much later.
I think of my practice as a kind of Gesamtkunstwerk — a total work of art — where different mediums do not exist separately, but speak to each other. A painting can become a film. A photograph can become a poem. A sentence can hold the same emotional weight as a colour.
A lot of my work begins from personal experience, but I do not want it to stay only personal. I am interested in the moment where something private becomes recognisable to someone else. Where a colour, a face, a gesture, a wound, a room, or a silence can carry emotion without needing to explain itself.
For me, making work is a way of returning to myself.
